Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort combines history and golf

Like some history with your golf? The Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club offers a great combination, along with the sun and sand of Florida’s Gulf coast.

The 375-room hotel as been a St. Pete landmark since it opened (at a cost of $3.5 million) in 1925. Listed on the register of Historic Hotels in America, the Vinoy now is at the center of the city’s downtown renaissance that includes art galleries, coffee shops and craft breweries.

With five restaurants and lounges, a spa, the Vinoy is a terrific headquarters hotel for all things Bay area, including Major League Baseball Spring Training, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the area’s beaches and attractions that include the “must visit’’ Dali Museum.

Those attractions include golf, beginning with the Vinoy Golf Club, which started out nearly 90 years ago as the Coffee Pot Golf Course on Snell Island. Today, the Vinoy Golf Club is a par 71, Ron Garl design that plays from 6,626 yards from the tips. The course has six sets of tees, so there’s no problem picking the corrct one for any skill level.

The course (open only to members and resort guests) is located in a quiet, residential area less than two miles from the resort and is resplendent with wildlife, oak trees and palm trees. In fact, there are more than 900 palm trees on the course, including Bismarck palms found in Madagascar and Giant Fishtail palm from Indonesia.

“Playing at The Vinoy is like being at your own home club – personal, friendly, inviting and welcoming,’’ said Director of Golf Randy Mosley. “Our return business from players who have purchased the golf package at the resort in the past is very high.’’

The resort, Mosely said, hosts between 50 and 75 corporate events per year, with anywhere from 24 to 128 players

“The course is very Important to moving the needle on golf packages. Roughly 2,000 rounds per year from these types of groups are manageable here.’’
