Greater Fort Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival was 18 months in the making

The official dates of the first Greater Fort Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival are March 20-24, but the culinary party won’t stop there. Festival Founder Kate Reed is planning soon-to-be announced monthly events – beginning in April – to keep the event front and center in the minds of residents in Broward County and beyond.

“People are excited about doing something that’s Broward-based,’’ said Reed, who began planning the GFLFWF more than 18 months ago.

The Festival, which will take place in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, will feature food from local restaurants, craft spirit brands, wineries and breweries.

Partners for the Grand Tasting (limited to 3,000 guests) on March 23 will include include Casa D’Angelo, Café Maxx, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants, Lobster Bar Sea Grille, Olivia Restaurant and Bar and The Capital Grille.

Festivals are nothing new to Reed, who had worked for the past few years on the Fort Lauder Air Show and other air shows along the East Coast.
“One day I was meeting with a general manager at a (Fort Lauderdale) beach hotel,’’ Reed said. “He asked me what I thought we could bring here.’

Given Broward County’s culinary renaissance, Reed knew the answer. Thus, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Food & Wine Festival was born.

“I had worked closely with city, parks and recreation, with fire, and of course with the hotels,’’ on the air shows, Reed said. “And we got a great reception (for the Festival). A lot better than I expected, honestly. That really pushed us to make it happen.

“Everything about this has been fun. We are working with great people and we’ve met some amazing partners in the area that we didn’t even know existed.’’
