Fashion, music and art come together for Miami Art Week and Art Basel

Louis Vuitton is gearing up to launch two new special collections during Miami Art Week and Art Basel, Dec. 6-9. Its Objets Nomades collection features new designers alongside one of a kind designers that will be at Design Miami/ and the Design District store; the Exotics collection includes 150 different styles with a few exclusive to Miami. LOEWE and Jonathan Anderson will also unveil the fourth installment of the Chance Encounter IV Series with three new artists.

In addition, the Miami Design District will unveil a holiday commission designed by young contemporary artist, Dozie Kanu, in addition to many public and site specific art installations and exhibitions, and a performance by Emily Estefan as part of the fall Performance Series.

Here’s a closer look at some Miami Art Week/Art Basel events:

Louis Vuitton presents Objets Nomades | December 4 – 9
This year, Louis Vuitton is back with their ever popular Objets Nomades collection, which will be exhibited at Design Miami, Dec. For Design Miami 2018, Louis Vuitton presents new pieces from Objets Nomades, an ever-expanding collection of limited edition, collectible furniture inspired by the House’s historic Art of Travel campaign. The interwoven nature of Louis Vuitton’s savoir-faire with the discerning eye of renowned designers has created inventive shapes, materials, and products—a tradition that continues with the Objets Nomades.

Louis Vuitton Miami Exotics Collection: Luxury Handbag Event | November 29 – December 9
The Exotics Collection will be available at the Luxury Handbag Event at Louis Vuitton’s Miami Design District store. The exhibition will highlight approximately 150 different Exotics for Women and Men from their offering in one location – a rare occasion to have so many styles and colors available in the United States. There will also be select styles that are exclusive to Miami.

LOEWE Chance Encounter IV Series | December 4 – January 31
Conceptualized by Creative Director and Designer Jonathan Anderson, Chance Encounters first launched its series in Miami in 2015 within the walls of the LOEWE Miami Design District boutique. For the fourth installment of this exhibition, Jonathan Anderson has chosen the works of German artist Andrea Büttner, British ceramicist Ian Godfrey and artist Anne Lowe. Their work will be exhibited at the LOEWE Miami Design District store.

The House of Creed presents An Artful Scents Soiree | December 6
In collaboration with artist Taelor Fisher, The House of Creed will be host an artful scents soiree that celebrates its new fragrance, Floralie. The evening will feature a live painting installation, crafted beverages and passed hors d’oeuvres to match key notes that are prevalent in the fragrance.

Bird Feeders and Play Structures by Dozie Kanu | Through January 2

The Miami Design District’s Holiday Commission aims to enlighten spirits this holiday season with an art installation by 24-year-old contemporary artist Dozie Kanu. In partnership with Raise The Caliber, whose initiative is devoted to removing illegal guns off the streets and recycling gunmetal and bullets, Dozie will be creating pieces using recycled metal accompanied with bird feeders fabricated from the same metal. His inspiration comes from the nostalgia of his childhood and the idea of strangely familiar objects that peek a child’s curiosity.

(RED) Auction | December 5

The third (RED) Auction supports the fight against AIDS. U2 frontman Bono is collaborating with Theaster Gates and Sir David Adjaye for this event. The collections will be auctioned by Sotheby’s, preceded by a public exhibition presented by Gagosian at the Moore Building, which will open on World AIDS Day.

Miami Design District Performance Series Presents Emily Estefan | December 7
The Miami Design District Performance Series has been well-received by the public and in its third series, Emily Estefan, daughter of multiple Grammy award-winner Emilio Estefan, is back for another performance with her smooth vocals and jazzy arrangements on Friday, December 7.

Frei Otto Music Pavilion Tent
Award winning architect Frei Otto, an innovator of lightweight construction has partnered with Birdair (TAIYO), the leading contractor of custom tensile structures in the world to create a newly fabricated tent. The music pavilion tent will join the Fly’s Eye Dome in the Miami Design District; both structures link the past to the present and both projects involve close collaborations with those organizations that are working to preserve the legacy of these pioneering thinkers.

Jokester 2 by Paula Crown
Artist Paula Crown’s series of sculptural installations SOLO TOGETHER hopes to challenge viewers to reevaluate the impacts of throwaway consumerism. Whether it is a family reunion or at a beer pong tournament, the SOLO cup is a staple at any party in America. Paula hopes her playful installation will get viewers to re-think single-use plastics and never see a SOLO Cup the same way again.

Shun Sud Mural
Artist Shun Sudo is best known for his work that reflects a mix of his Japanese culture and the contemporary street culture of Western life. He uses Japanese sumi-e brush strokes which he then paints over with graffiti pop art, showing his deep influence of American pop culture. His two artistic styles will be exhibited at the Miami Design District during Art Basel.

Yusuke Ochiai
Inspired by the radiant colors of his surrounding Japanese landscape from his childhood, artist Yusuke Ochiai reflects this enchantment of colors onto his work. Based in Brooklyn, Yusuke continues to display interest in vibrant colors through his work as a New York City street artist and most of his work depicts colorful swirls of love and lust. You will be able to view his colorful and energetic pieces during Art Basel at the Miami Design District.

Spanierman Modern | December 3 – 8
An Experience of Color: Landscapes and Legacies in Abstraction, curated by Niama Safia Sandy, will open at Spanierman Modern’s new project space in the Miami Design District, with a complimentary presentation at Art Miami.

Museum Garage

The Miami Design District debuted the area’s latest phase of development, the highly anticipated Museum Garage this past May. Featuring the work of five world-class architects, the seven-story mixed-use structure will house ground-floor retail spaces and maintain the capacity for 800 vehicles.

The Craig Robins Collection
The Craig Robins Collection features works by top contemporary artists from around the world, alongside post-war, limited-edition design pieces. Exhibited at the corporate offices of Dacra, the collection exemplifies the thesis that art enhanced spaces foster vibrant communities. Artists exhibited this year include Urs Fischer, Njideka Akuyili-Crosby, Christina Quarles and Jorge Pardo among others.

Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami)
ICA Miami celebrates major solo survey exhibitions dedicated to Judy Chicago and Larry Bell, alongside focused monographic presentations of work by Louise Bourgeois, William N. Copley, and Manuel Solano, as well as a newly commissioned sculpture by Henry Taylor in the museum’s Sculpture Garden.

4510/SIX x Henrik Vibskov Art Basel Event | December 4
Concept store 4510/SIX (formerly Tenoversix) has a unique pop-up that you won’t want to miss out on. Teaming up with Danish fashion designer and artist Henrik Vibskov, the anticipated event will feature “shop-in-shop’’ modules within the store adapted from Henrik’s runway design aesthetics. Additionally, the event will feature exclusive looks from BATSHEVA Spring 19 collection–inspired by artwork from Judy Chicago–and will be available for pre-order during Basel week only.
