September promises to be a big month at the fabled Pinehurst Resort in the sandhills of North Carolina. Not only is Sept. 20 scheduled to be the opening day for the Gil Hanse-renovated No. 4 Course, Labor Day Weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 3) will mark the opening of the Pinehurst Brewery – the resort’s first microbrewery.
The brewery and accompanying restaurant will occupy the original steam plant building inside the Village of Pinehurst. The building was built in 1895 – the same year the resort opened – and has gone unoccupied for the past 35 years. The Pinehurst Brewery will feature on-site brewing, indoor/outdoor seating and a beer garden.
“When people come here and go to our bars, they want to try something that’s local,’’ Pinehurst Resort President Tom Pashley told me. “With our clientele being 70 percent male, we think it’s going to hit our guests right between the eyes.’’
Much of the building’s original brick and façade is being used in its restoration, including brick corbeling and original steel windows.
The brewery’s location is within easy walking distance of the resort’s hotels, including the Carolina Hotel.
“If we put a microbrewery and restaurant on the driving range, it wouldn’t be as interesting,’’ Pashley said. “To put it in an old building that was part of the origins of Pinehurst, is great. We haven’t set the full direction yet, but we’re really excited about how it’s going to fit in.’’
