3 of Hearts Game Shop + Eatery opens in Lake Worth

Adding to Lake Worth’s eclectic restaurant scene is a new gastropub tapas bar and classic board game concept – 3 of Hearts Game Shop + Eatery. Owned by Robin Popelsky, 3 of Hearts offers a tapas-style cuisine, wine, beer from local breweries, along with classic board games that will appeal to a group of friends, a date or the entire family.

The restaurant is centered around the number 3, a number that Popelsky holds close to her heart. Growing up, she believed there were 3 parts to every whole, as her and her 2 sisters made up her family.  The girls, along with their parents, gathered together every night around the dinner table. In addition to enjoying a meal together, on some Fridays, the family would take out classic board games to further connect.

When Popelsky’s younger sister passed away last year, she wanted to do something in her honor. She packed up her bags and left her career in New York City, where she managed venues and oversaw catering at such high-end places as The Park Restaurant, The Bowery Hotel and The Standard NYC and moved to South Florida.

She gathered her niece, Denise Barcenas and nephew, John Whitmore, to join her on her new venture and 3 of Hearts was born.

Whitmore, who received his culinary degree from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and honed his skills at the Club at Ibis, works as the chef of the restaurant, while Barcenas is master mixologist.

To connect the name and the game shop concept with the menu, Popelsky came up with the idea to present menu items in trios.  Following suit, Popelsky and Chef John Whitmore came up with a base menu concept, which Whitmore further developed to include comfort food classics with a modern twist – all surrounding the number 3.

The menu includes Mac ’n Cheese served 3 ways – classic, shroom and shrimp;  a trio of crostini – roasted grape and goat cheese, eggplant relish, white beans and rosemary; Three Pigs – candied, braised and crispy |pork belly; and a seafood trio – crab cake, shrimp cake, conch cake.

The beverage program will include wine, beer and wine and beer-based cocktails created by Barcenas.

Classic games available for play include Cards Against Humanity, Jenga, Backgammon, Checkers, Scrabble, Connect 4, Operation and Sorry.
